Hammock Safety
Saturday, August 15th, 2009Before purchasing a cheap hammock there are some things to consider.
If you have children you must use caution when your children are around a hammock. Please don’t leave them unattended when there is a hammock around.
A hammock swing will give you, your friends and your family a fantastic way to relax outdoors. However, you should definitely avoid certain things to maintain a high level of safety. Also, to make sure it stays in good shape for a long period of time, follow these simple tips and take nice care of your hammock.

Basic Safety
The most important thing to avoid with a cheap hammock swing is danger. Obviously you will first need to make sure you have enough room around the cheap hammock. Remember there are different sizes of cheap hammocks you can choose to fit. With a hammock swing you can run the risk of banging your foot, hand, or even head on something as it swings.
Be sure to secure every tie you have made to hold the cheap hammock up, just in case one of your knots is a little loose. If your family will be enjoying the hammock as well, this safety measure is essential. Check for rips or holes in the hammock that may rip more or allow a small child to slip their leg through on accident. Be sure the strong hammock is tight enough so nobody droops all the way to the ground. Secure your spreader bar if you have one, a great tool to lift the hammock and straighten it out a bit.
Caring for your Hammock
Avoid leaving your affordable hammock outdoors for long periods of time. As long as you keep it out of the rain and constant intense sun, you can leave it outside generally, but bringing it indoors will definitely keep it in better shape and will make it last longer. The dirt and wear the hammock goes through being outside all the time is too much after only a few years. If you notice that the hammock is getting dirty, definitely wash it consistently.
Activities to Avoid
Never allow your children and their friends to start using your hammock swing as some kind of toy. Playing on a hammock can be seriously dangerous for kids who simply see it as a way to have fun. To be totally safe, don’t allow your kids to use the hammock without adult supervision.
Never attempt to stand on the hammock or even stand on your knees. The most common injuries come from the hammock flipping over and dropping its occupant onto the ground, so use common sense and move carefully and slowly. Avoid drinking on the cheap hammock if you don’t want to spill on yourself or the hammock itself. When swinging on the hammock, don’t build up too much speed and momentum. By swinging too hard, far and fast, you run the real risk of tipping over your hammock stand, flipping over the cheap hammock itself, or both. Again, common sense should keep you and your family safe and relaxed in your hammock. As a general rule, do everything slow and you should be fine. Enjoy!
